Our Curriculum
At Princess May, our curriculum is designed so that every child leaves us as a confident, curious and knowledgeable learner, ready for the next stage of their education. It is built on the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage, and on our school values of Respect, Empathy and Determination.
What our curriculum aims to do
We expect every child to reach age-related expectations, and our central purpose is to help pupils and families overcome any barriers they face. Our curriculum aims to:
- give every child the knowledge they need to succeed, set out clearly for each year group;
- make sure every child learns to read, and develops a love of reading;
- build pupils’ understanding of the world, and of how each subject finds things out;
- develop pupils’ talents and interests through a rich programme of enrichment.
How our curriculum is built
Each subject is planned as a spiral curriculum. Pupils return to the same knowledge and skills throughout their time with us, each time in greater depth, so that new learning builds on what they already know.
In every subject, pupils learn both substantive knowledge (the facts and concepts of the subject) and disciplinary knowledge (how that knowledge is found out, such as historical enquiry or working scientifically).
The curriculum is the same ambitious curriculum for all pupils, including pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and disadvantaged pupils. Teachers adapt how they teach so that every child can access it.
