Mathematics
We want pupils to leave Princess May as confident, resilient mathematicians with a deep understanding of number and of how to approach problems. We follow MyMastery (Ark Curriculum), which goes beyond the National Curriculum and builds understanding through the Dimensions of Depth: conceptual understanding, language and communication, and mathematical thinking.
How maths is taught
- Each lesson starts with a Do Now task to build fluency.
- Key vocabulary (“star words”) is taught, and pupils explain their thinking in full sentences.
- New ideas are modelled with practical equipment and pictures before moving to numbers.
- All pupils learn the same concept together, with support where needed, and every lesson includes a Deeper Learning challenge.
- Quizzes before each unit check what pupils already know, so gaps are closed early.
