Home Learning
At Princess May, we believe homework helps children to practise and extend what they learn in school, and helps parents and carers to support their child at home. We also recognise that, after a long day or week at school, children need time to join in with their family's normal routines. Our homework is therefore manageable, flexible and builds directly on what children have been taught.
When is homework set?
- Homework is set every Friday in your child's homework folder.
- It is returned the following Wednesday.
What homework will my child receive?
| Year group |
Weekly homework |
| Reception |
Reading: three books – one read in RWI Phonics that week, one matched to your child's phonics level and one of their choice |
| Years 1 and 2 |
Reading: three books, as above Maths: a practice sheet linked to that week's teaching |
| Years 3 to 6 |
Reading: two books – one chosen with their teacher to suit their reading level, and one of their choice Maths: a practice sheet linked to that week's teaching Spelling: a short list of spellings, tested the following week |
Homework is set at a level and amount suited to each child's age, stage and needs, and is adapted where necessary for pupils with SEND or those working below age-related expectations.
How can I help at home?
- Ask your child about what they have learnt at school.
- Listen to your child read and talk about books together. Reading every day, or at least 3–4 times a week, makes a real difference.
- Play number and word games.
- Practise times tables, spellings and number facts.
- Support handwriting and letter formation, and look at your child's writing with them.
- Provide a quiet space for homework. Younger children benefit from short sessions of 10–15 minutes; older children should build stamina and independence.
If your child finds a task difficult, please speak to their class teacher. Children who need extra support can attend our homework club.
