Wellbeing and Mental Health

At Princess May Primary School we take children’s emotional health and wellbeing very seriously.

Every class has a Worry Box where children can share a concern or ask for support if they don’t feel able to say it out loud. Weekly Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons give children the knowledge, skills and understanding to lead confident, healthy and independent lives.

Emotional regulation

We use the Zones of Regulation to help children to:

  • recognise their emotions;
  • name their emotions;
  • express their emotions in a healthy way; and
  • use strategies to support them when they are finding things difficult.

Support in school

Our pastoral and SEND team work closely with children and families. Children can also access support from our school therapist through Connect Education, and some children may be offered one-to-one sessions where this would help.

Specialist mental health support

We are part of the Wellbeing and Mental Health in Schools (WAMHS) project, which connects us with a specialist practitioner from local mental health services. They work alongside our SEND and pastoral team to strengthen the support we offer. You can find out more about WAMHS in Hackney on the Hackney Local Offer website.

Assemblies and awareness days

Regular wellbeing assemblies and national events such as Children’s Mental Health Week and Mental Health Awareness Week keep wellbeing a focus across the school and give children the chance to practise ways of looking after themselves.

Enrichment

If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please speak to your child’s class teacher or contact the school office.
