World Cup - Tom Palmer's Defenders: Russia

In year 6, we've been gripped by author Tom Palmer's Defenders: Russia story, which is unfolding "live" each day, with real events from the 2018 World Cup! We even got the chance to debate what happened next in one of the chapters and sent  our votes in (Our option was chosen!)

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about Algebra! We were able to solve and interpret different algebraic expressions.

In Science, we have been learning about the human body.

Ben Kinsella workshop

We visited the Ben Kinsella exhibition and took part in a very important and educational workshop about the prevention of knife crime and peer pressure.

In Literacy, we have been writing a range of chiller texts! We even transformed our classrooms! BEWARE...

Literacy - Slow Writing

In Literacy, we've been learning how to use a technique called Slow Writing. It helps us to slow down the process of writing and think about all the different techniques we could incorporate! We like to work together to form our initial ideas, before we begin to draft our own piece of writing!

Hackney Pirates

The Hackney Pirates is an enterprising charity working to develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of young people in Hackney, so that they achieve both in school and in the world beyond. Our very own young Pirates recently published their very own book, which you can now purchase from the Hackney Pirates café!  Listen to them read what they have written! We are very proud!

 

 

Literacy

During Literacy, we re-enacted the Christmas Truce for our WW1 Topic! We were inspired by Sainsbury's brilliant advert!

Citizenship workshop 

We have been learning about being a safe and responsible citizen when out and about in London. Thank you Transport for London and Hackney Museum!

 

December

STEM Club

Our school was selected to receive places for a number of Year 6 pupils to take part in an exciting new after-school club, run by Inspire! Education Business Partnership.  It aimed to promote and engage pupils interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) career pathways. In the club, pupils will took part in a series of challenges over five weeks. The challenges were designed by CREST, which is the only STEM accreditation for children and is nationally recognised. 

 

Art

Class Library!

One of our year 6 pupils - Asad, very kindly brought in his own books from home and created his very own library! The rest of the class couldn't wait to borrow some of his collection! He has also inspired other children to do the same!

Topic

WOW! Check out some of the Anderson Shelters that our Year 6 pupils created for our WW2 Topic! We are blown away!

   

Our trip to The Crystal, Emirates Air Line Cable Car and Thames Boat ride

As part of our new Science launch based on Electricity, we visited The Crystal to learn about sustainable energy! We also got a chance to travel on the Emirates Airline cable cars, as well as a boat trip down the River Thames! We had a great day out!

    

  

  

 

Literacy

We used a conscience alley to offer advice as to what Bruno should say from 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas!' Should he help his friend Shmuel by telling the truth? Or should he lie and save himself from possible punishment? We then wrote our own persuasive speeches to help persuade Bruno in making the right decision!

Literacy

During our Literacy lessons, we've been writing diary entries, letters and character descriptions, based on our class novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

  

Reading

This term, our topic is World War 2! Therefore, our class novel is The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas! During our reading lessons, we analyse, predict, evaluate and make inferences where necessary using your class novel. This then supports our Literacy lessons!

   

Numeracy

We've been learning how to plot coordinates on a graph! We then tested our knowledge by playing a game of Battle Ships!

WELCOME BACK

A warm welcome back to the school year. The class names for year 6 this year are OAK and ELDER. We have had a fantastic first few weeks back in class. Please make sure to check out our class page every week to see what we've been learning!

Topic

Our Topic focus this half term is WW2. In our History lesson, we looked through the contents of an evacuee's suitcase and then wrote our very own letters home!

For our last half term at Princess May, we will be doing a kayaking course every Monday!

 

 

Friday's All Write

In year 6, after our politics day in May, we have been following the general election and have been fascinated by all of the different political parties and their manifestos! On June 8th, we were excited to see that our school was used as a polling station! The following day, we discovered that there had been a hung parliament, and as a result, we decided to write our own political speeches, entitled: If I were Prime Minister...

 

 

May

Arsenal

Arsenal Ladies and England defender Alex Scott visited us at Princess May as part of Premier League Primary Stars scheme! Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills. We had a great day!

London History Day - 26th May

On the 26th of May, we celebrated London History day! We dressed up as someone from London's past!

Enabling Enterprise - Politics Day

As part of our launch for Enabling Enterprise, we had a whole school Politics Day! Enabling Enterprise's mission is to equip young people with the skills, experiences and aspirations they need to succeed in life! We had a brilliant day learning about politics and the current general election!

 

Art

In Art, we have been learning about the famous artist Picasso! Inspired by his work, we created our own masterpieces using pastels! Check out our brilliant artwork!

 

 

In Art, we also learnt how to do very detailed observational drawings! We used black card and white chalk to create these outstanding and detailed observational drawings of eyes!

School Attendance

Year 6 has the highest school attendance! Well done Year 6 - keep it up! We were awarded with a platter of fresh fruit for each year 6 class! YUM!

 

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been investigating and learning how to use different methods for multiplication! One of the methods we learnt how to use was the ‘line multiplication’ method!

 

 

We also investigated how to use Napier's bones method to multiply several digits!

 

 

SATs week

Every morning, Year 6 had a free healthy breakfast before sitting their SATs papers - YUM! Good luck to our amazing Year 6 pupils, who have worked extremely hard! We are very proud of you!

Maths

Year 6 are currently preparing for our SATs! In Maths, we have been learning how to write simple algebraic expressions!

Science fair

For science week, pupils across the school took part in our annual Princess May science fair! Many pupils showcased their science experiments from home! Check out some of our awesome scientists in year 6! Thank you to all of our parents who attended!

  

  

  

 

Science Week

This week was National Science week! Across the school, pupils took part in various science experiments! In year 6, we investigated whether Oobleck slime could protect an egg if we dropped it from a certain height! We discovered that some liquids, like quicksand for instance, act differently depending on how much force you apply to them. They're called non-Newtonian fluids and they have some very unusual properties! We also made and launched our very own Alka-Seltzer Rockets in the playground!

Hackney Junior Police Cadet Of The Year!

One of our Year 6 pupils, Yasmeena has won Best Junior Cadet for Hackney borough and was nominated for overall Best Junior cadet in London!

Yasmeena was invited to collect her award on Saturday 11th February 2017 at Westminster, where the Commissioner attended, as well as our Borough Commander, cadets and staff  from all over London. All those shortlisted, including Yasmeena received Certificates at the event.

We are so proud of our amazing Hackney Junior Police cadet of the year - Yasmeena!

In Science, we dissected real lamb hearts! Using string, we worked out the direction of blood flow through the heart! We were fascinated by what a heart looked like inside!

Remembrance Day

Class Assembly

In Year 6, we have been learning about Remembrance Day. We have been learning how to  recite the poem Flanders Field by Dr John McCrae.

In Literacy, we have been learning about World War 1 and Remembrance Day. We read and discussed a range of war poetry. We then analysed a chosen war poem and wrote a fact file about the poet.

In History, we imagined we were evacuees during World War 2 and wrote letters home!

Year 6 have been writing some amazing setting descriptions of a prehistoric forest - inspired by Conan-Doyle's The Lost World!

In Literacy, we have been studying the work of Vivian Usherwood for Black History Month. We decided to explore the streets of Hackney, to give us some inspiration for our poems! Hackney is full of different sights, smells and sounds. We couldn't wait to write our final poems!

     

     

Science

In Science, we made our very own periscopes! This helped us to learn about the reflection of light!

IntoUniversity

Throughout the week, Malachite class attended IntoUniversity. We have been learning all about Space!

    

    

At the end of our week with IntoUniversity, we graduated at Goldsmith University! We were able to explore the university campus and ask the students some questions. We all did a presentation about everything we had learnt throughout the week. We also discussed our aspirations for the future.
